Bachelor Party White Water Rafting

with one comment

Last weekend, I went on a bachelor party for my buddy who is getting hitched later next month. Overall a great trip with some chaotic camping, fun rafting and seeing a lot of old friends. We went rafting up at Kern River just at the edge of Sequoia National Park by Isabella Lake. This was my first time rafting and I believe I may have found my true calling in life. While I had one incident where I almost fell in, I was tempted to “accidentally” fall in during one of the rapids because it seemed like fun to experience my body get thrown around against rocks like a rag doll as I dip in and out of the punishing wakes. Call me crazy but I might do that next time.

Our guide was exceptional in that he yelled at us and was a hard-nosed coach in the beginning. This made us paddle and move in complete unison which helped us out a lot. The other raft on the other hand… had a very thrilling day of guides falling out the back, people getting head-dipped backwards into the rapids. I guess you can say they were “high side” specialists by the end of the day. We went down Class IV rapids the majority of the day with a couple of Class V’s thrown in there…which was a lot of fun. Next time I go, I will definitely be going on a multi-day Class V trip.

By the way, here’s the definition of “high side” taken from a whitewater rafting website:

High Side – The necessary act of jumping to the “high side” when coming up against an obstacle sideways. Always jump downstream, towards the rock or obstacle. When executed properly, it can help prevent a wrap or a flip.

I guess these guys  are not high side specialists…

Here are our pictures:

Going into a pit…

Fully submerged…

Emerging victorious!

Good times.
